Activity Report 3rd of June 2011

This week, we still have some of our people in Asia while the rest of the team is here working hard on new features for the expansion and improving existing features as well.


Your input on our questions towards the siege system has been processed and is being taken into consideration and testing. Thank you very much for all the feedback!

That also means we would like to add a bit of additional information and new questions to the discussion:

The fact that a challenge can be joined by any one during the first phase obviously bears the question as to who will get the wager in the end. Right now there are several options we are taking into consideration. After some more testing over the weekend we will get back to you with more info and feedback requests for this specific part.

One thing we already asked you about was the minimum amount of active players a clan should have in order to issue an attack.
We will also check how many members a specific clan has DURING an attack and make sure that this number doesn’t fall below a certain amount. Only the amount of clan members will be checked and not the amount of members that are actually online during the siege. With this knowledge what numbers do you think would be fitting? What differentiation should there be between attacking a hamlet and attacking a city?

Another point that we would like your feedback on is what you think the maximum amount of possible attackers on the same clan should be. Obviously we know that you are not in favor of the 1 siege per clan rule which means we added the option to freely customize this from our side to any number we see fit.

Our current plan for the new siege mechanics is to have them live within a month. Obviously, everything depends on testing and internal QA. Once the system is live with the settings we deem right, we will be monitoring your feedback on it closely and adjust the settings as necessary.

We also realize some of you were wondering about the Bi-Weekly Chaos Chests News Summary. They are not gone, but we are currently streamlining and reorganizing them internally. On this topic, we always get a lot of complaints about the political part of the Chests and are still very dependent on players willing to report on them. If you are interested and willing to work with us on this part, please feel free to contact any of the Liaisons on the forums.

In a rough overview we also mentioned that the PvE content is being worked on for Darkfall Arena – in that regard we would like to give you a bit more information about the new PvE Dungeons:
Each continent will have their own themed dungeon. All of them are huge and have different areas that you need to traverse. Doing this, however, leaves you with choices as to which way to go and which challenges to face. The way you choose will not only determine the opponents you have to fight and the rewards you’ll get, but it will also present different challenges that come with the terrain and the areas you need to travel through. Let’s take the main Cairn Dungeon as an example:  Minotaurs are some of the main inhabitants of this area and in order to get through this challenging location, you will also have to find your way through a labyrinth area. Other dungeons have similar challenges that are fitting with the themes and inhabitants.
We are also reworking the concept of risk versus reward for a lot of the monster encounters and taking this into special consideration for the new dungeons as well.

PvP Content is being worked on as well and will be introduced gradually leading up to the actual Expansion. These new features are not only coming from our own designs but we also monitor the suggestion forums closely and often take ideas from the community as a base to develop from. The idea here is that we will build on existing, frequently used features and rethink existing ones that either will get improved/balanced or removed due to them no longer deemed fitting.

The next patch will also, among other things, include fixes to things the community has been asking for, such as addressing the tower screams, timers for the NA Sea Towers and timers for zoning in and out of dungeons.

And to finish this short overview we leave you with one of many new denizens of Agon that you will encounter sooner or later!

Crafty as a fox on fire, Imps are the yes-men of hell.  They have recently arrived on Agon to take their place as the diminutive and homicidal minions of the Devils. These cunning little sycophantic creatures will swarm around their masters and support them in whatever way they can.  In return the Devils will show their gratitude by occasionally not stomping one into a bloody smear.  They have been known to eat brownies, small pebbles, and generally anything that happens to be in the immediate vicinity during a feeding frenzy.

    Also Need more specific info regarding the expansion.
    Like the new dungeon ideas but make sure people can actually do it in small groups or else you wont see people doing it.

    Good stuff, but where is the ETA for the expansion..?

    • I fear the expansion is a long ways away. If the siege mechanics are coming in around a month, and PvP content will be “introduced gradually” up to the expansion, there’s no way they’re going to get it out this quarter let alone it seems even next quarter.

      Plus, there has been no information given on prestige classes or any specifics of armor specializations.

      I’m glad though that they’re implementing the siege mechanics BEFORE the expansion.

  4. we really need an eta on expac now. this expac originally planned for 2010 then renamed arena and planned for q2 2011, and now we need another eta.

      All I have to say is this was originally called darkfall 2010 because it was supposed to be released in 2010 and last time I checked 2011 is coming to a close so by my book thats almost 2 years working on this and we still have no idea when its coming. for those of u who r expecting it to ever come, well u mine as well ask Santa for world peace. sorry AV dont mean to be an a** maybe if u actually did what u said u where going to do and not constantly be delayed people would have more respect. U need to higher more people.

  8. I appreciate that you guys are asking for our input but to me most of the answers seem obvious. If the new siege system is so tweakable, why not just present all these questions internally (especially since you guys are privy to the whole system), make some command decisions and launch the already completed siege system on Monday? Then you can observe and evaluate how it is doing and the players can give you non-speculative input. With that you can quickly tweak it as you stated you can. It’s kind of treating the main servers as a test server but it’s a hell of lot better than waiting another month with a known broken system.
    I’m sure the community wouldn’t mind this move.

    Please consider this suggestion.

    you should be able to fix that stuff like tower screen etc in 1 week with any other simple thing… you are just collecting our money and doing nothing…

      They only managed to piss off the morons it seems. The rest of us understand that relaunches and expansions this big take time. I’d rather they get it right than pander to the people with ADD that wouldn’t be happy with ANYTHING that gets put out.

    Building things from existing frequently used features and rethinking existing ones is alright but its not what players what, what we really WANT is NEW CONTENT. New melle moves (shield bash, counter-attacks) new spells with interesting effects besides the generic stuff (like a spell that creates a shadow behind the target to attack him) new sandbox stuff like taverns and card games, etc etc. Fuck the old stuff the game has, just add LOADS of content THEN you focus on balancing…

    • First thing they need to do if they want to ever have a chance to have a community like they did in beta/release is make it so characters cant be GOD anymore. Think Asherons Call where we actually had hybrid basic mage/Melee, basic mage/Archer, War Mage, Life Mage, GIMPED Mage, All classes made by players.. essentially u can have it all.. but you will be freaken gimped because you points would be spread out. Ever since release, its whoever has the most time can have all skills… macro macro and i become god. It was a huge competitive swing to get every skill maxed and brought no uniqueness to individual players.

    after reading a few more comments on here I decided to share some news u should already be aware of. in the last 3 months the NA sever pop has dropped by over 40%…..maybe its time to pull ur head out ur ass and start doing something besides empty promises.

  21. As for maximum amount of attackers I would start with unlimited and change it accordingingly. If you really are hated by that many people than go you.

    I love how there is actually no responses to this post. Vacantfall is mere weeks away.

    I feel like a starving child in a 3rd world country that lives on a diet of dry rice and dirt. How am I supposed to enjoy my rice and dirt after you’ve teased me with this plate of T-bone steak and buttery mashed potato?

    These announcements ruined Darkfall in its current state for me. There were a lot more interesting new features discussed around that time also, but these were the main ones I was most excited about. I simply cannot enjoy the game without these features anymore.

    2010 is long gone and we’re mid way through 2011. I hope this meeting in Asia goes well and some agreement is reached that will give Aventurine access to a larger studio of game designers that can pump out content at a semi-reasonable rate.

    The expansion ETA better be 50 days from now because I’m not even going to re sub to check it out.

    Hell Darkfall better be free to play for 15-30 days after Arena. The game is great, but the time sinks are too depressing.

    My suggestion is review older videos that built up all the hype and figure out how to make Darkfall into that game.

    Magic should be something that is tied into the alignment and armor.

    Spells should also be more customizable.

    I don’t know if this comment will help AV, but I have no more suggestions until AV release Arena with the handful of fixes they may have planned and developed.

    • one word.. ‘skill based game’ when people saw that they thought ‘player skill based’ NOT ‘lets make 3,000 different skills that each have to level up and say we removed grind’

  27. lol im assuming 99% of you don’t have the slightest idea how to run a company… so you have no idea what it takes… but truthly AV what the fuck…ive been waiting forever to resub but you never put ANY fucking new content in, jesus christ put an easy way to get pvp solo and group and add the damn armor system, are you fucking stupid? you would get so many people to resub

  28. I personally have taken a 6 month break due to the boring usual grind. Nothing new, and no news of anything coming. That was in October of 2010…Now its June 2011 and still nothing on any new content added to the game that’s worth while…This is my first mmo, and I use to like the game so much I thought it would be my last, but I will not be re-subbing if the expansion does not come out soon.

  29. No important news in here, but at least nice to have some feedback whatsoever from AV, which is a vast improvement from before.

    As for asked for feedback:

    Member numbers to issue a Siege: 10 for taking a City, 5 for a Hamlet.

    Regardless what the numbers are for issuing a Siege, the minimum members in a Clan for maintaining it should be the same. Anything else would be confusing and/or exploitable.

    There should be no limit on maximum number of attackers. That would be immersion-breaking as well as work against Political Play between clans which is also a factor. ANY “rules” that feel “unnatural” are anti-sandbox and immersionbreaking. Even Sieges should feel somewhat realistic regarding what is possible (which the 1 siege/clan/day was NOT, why we are very happy about the new system).

    However, one thing to lessen the impact on the Sieges regarding lag, would be not to announce them to the entire Server, but only to the Clans involved. (Same should go for War declarations.) If you want to get to know about a Siege, do some legwork. This way, you won’t have loads of PvP-hungry vultures coming in and meddling in the Siege, but making incentives for people to get some contacts with clans to be invited to Sieges when they happend so there will be more of a political aspect to gameplay.

    Announcing the results of Sieges is another matter though, and will be enough to make people know that thing are happening in the world (which was the intention of letting everyone know of them).

  30. i won’t renew my two accounts for now. I will wait till the expansion comes out and after reading a few comments about it, maybe i will reactivate both again. The game is nice but i think it needs more content and a few things to do “solo”. Not all the players want to play in a clan and im a bit bored actually. Sorry my english ;)

    hmm, im trying to figure out what content you’re giving us the QQ about guys. I’ve been playing for 6 months and am finding new content daily. try exploration and if you HAVE seen everything literally i’m sure you’ll understand that ‘content’ the game has, just none that you havent seen.

    imo using the word ‘content’ is as obtuse as using the word ‘diversity’. this game needs diversity, yes, thats what it needs. please, if you’re gonna QQ do it in a fashion that gives them an idea on what you’re talking about. reading half these posts the only thing I understand is that lots of people dont realize the effort going into a coding session.

    go build a website ‘manually’ by typing all the lines yourself on notepad instead of using an editor, then come back and tell me about how fun it is. if you CAN write php, java, html, flash and all the other cool stuff without using an editor, you’re probably not the one complaining about ‘not fast enough’ or ‘broken promises’. AV is doing a great job, let them work and provide ‘useful specific’ feedback instead of going on about how miserable your life is.

    Darkfall is amazing, you need to stop look around you and realize it.
