Activity Report December 15
The sprint presentation took place on Monday and everyone’s work was presented. In the last activity report of 2010, we’ll talk a bit about what we’ve been working on the past few weeks and upcoming changes most of which are coming in the next few patches:
There are massive area redesigns underway. The human area is complete, clan city layouts are being scrutinized at the moment and the world-builders are moving on to the Orkish area. These activities are tied in with tool updates, there are new tools being produced to optimize terrain, road and river continuity and fixing terrain anomalies occurring during optimization. We saw some of the redesigns and optimizations and new tools were demonstrated.
New player characters are in progress, they should be added in the next expansion. Facial textures are done, several problems during the process have been addressed and new armors are being fitted at the moment. Animation motion capture workflow is complete and we saw 4 new hobgoblin animations, 2 of them were idle animations and 2 were fighting animations.
The Engine team has been working on the dynamic lighting features and we saw several demos of their progress. This work is going in the next expansion and should be very impressive to see in action.
As most of you know, we added the meditation feature in the latest patch. We’ve been looking at feedback and unfortunately many don’t seem to understand that meditation works with diminishing returns and not in a linear fashion. You should also keep in mind that we’ll be adding a lot more skills and (something we haven’t mentioned yet) attributes, in the next patches. We’ll try to make things clearer on how meditation works by showing you the incremental progression value after tomorrow’s patch. We’ll also give you a better idea on what the future holds for this feature which should be heavily revisited in almost every future patch for a while. Values here are not carved in stone, we’re examining them carefully and we’ll make any necessary tweaks and changes.
As far as the newbie experience goes, we’re going to help that along quite a bit with a total approach to character progression, an example of some of the actions we’ll be taking is increasing drop rate and frequency of attribute consumables and spell books.
We got to see a demonstration of the new political map. We’ve talked about this before but we didn’t mention that the map will also mark locations of player vendors with details on what they sell.
We discussed the new GUI, an exciting development, which unfortunately we cannot discuss at the moment. We’re still working on the current interface however, in tomorrow’s patch for example, we’re adding a default rest key-binding.
The designers are undertaking the massive task of redesigning the newbie experience and working on a total monster classification, redistribution and localization based on the lore. This is part of an overall strategy of localizing resources.
We’re looking at a lot of upcoming re-balancing changes to many of the issues related to player feedback and these will span every aspect of the game. Our designers have been working on mapping everything for a while now, running statistical analysis and exploring relationships.
There are alignment system changes coming as we’ve mentioned before. These are a complete approach on improving the alignment system and solving certain inherent issues surrounding it like for example a new approach to improving alignment, making it more meaningful with changes such as locking reds out of alliance, racial, and trade channels, adding a chaos chat open to everyone.
There are also upcoming changes to sieging and PvP, like addressing one man clans declaring war on everyone, the one siege limit against one clan, self sieging etc. Some of these fixes are coming in the next patches. There are more changes to improve PvP and massive battles like for example changes to spells like confusion, pungent mist and eye-rot going in tomorrow’s patch.
Ships will get additions and improvements. Fishing boats are coming and ship defenses vs. swimmers are going in the next patches. Finally, you’ll be able to despawn a ship only if you’re at the helm.
Tomorrow is patch day, and there will be several patches right after the holidays. There’s also a dynamic event planned for the NA server this weekend.
This is not all, there are unfortunately a lot more things we cannot talk about yet. We regret this, but it comes with the territory. Whether we are at liberty to discuss them or not however, we always take related player and community feedback into consideration so please keep it coming. We’ll continue working through the holidays and giving updates as needed.
Thank you for reading.
=D
The localization of mobs an resources sounds interesting, that coupled with the future clan vault access control could be a nice change for traders.
Excellent update! A lot of great stuff in there like increased drop rates of attribute potions and spell scrolls (these need an insane increase in drop rate), offline meditation involving attributes, changes to the alignment system, and changes to the sieging system.
Overall I’m very impressed with this report. Thanks for sharing.

Always good to hear from you guys keep up the work.
Awesome.
That was worth the read! Incredible. Its a love/hate relationship with these guys. This day i love them. lol. Plenty of new features and fixes to please a lot of folks. superb
Av you’re getting better and better each day!
Agreed!
More promises, hope y’all can deliver.
nice to hear about fishing boats make the game more like a sandbox!
Cant wait for Fishing boats just so I can rob them *drool*
Oh and everything else seems good two
wow nice, tmr? Awesome!
Excellent! Finally. I like these patches coming more frequently, even if they are with less inclusions.
However, I noticed the glaringly absent sound fixes. When is the ambient sound coming?

Can I make a simple suggestion.
To get noobies into using the new meditation feature, why not add 100 Meditation points as a reward for completing each quest.
Noobs tend to complete the most quests but earn the least gold. Adding 100 Med points to each quest would give them a decent number of points they can top up with a little of their own gold. Vets get a few free points here and there but overall this would really help noobies and make questing even more worthwhile.
There are already design discussions about this and more additions as to how to use meditation points.
Good one, i like it.
I made this suggestion like a year ago. Its so nice to see that they are making this game more noob friendly and helping people adjust to this game who are coming from others.
What I also think would be cool is if there were PVP quests (like the kill 3 one, but not exploitable) that awarded offline skilling.
There could be a repeatable RvR quest, for example:
Take the quest from racial capital and then head to a randomly picked zone on the map to be the first one to click on a randomly generated item somewhere in that zone (much like a chaos chest, but a chaos chest that every race is racing towards to be the first one to click or possible to guard the thing from being clicked on). While in this zone, you get credits for every evil race that you kill (only 1 point for person and not worth doing for vets so there would be no exploiting), and also the one who clicks on the item gets a bonus something. There’s one idea. I had a few more, but cannot remember now. It would be important to have this quest only once a week or maybe every other day, so that it is always crowded and everyone always has a good time. If it was done every day people would probably get sick of it.
Excellent suggestion.
Meditation is not really new player friendly at the moment. Rich characters only can attempt to always be training when offline. It cost over 2000gp per day to meditate during all offline hours.
In my humble opinion, Meditation should be more advantageous than… (dare I say it) automated casting, swimming mindlessly, etc. If not, it’s obvious that players will simply optimize by doing online repetitions and then a few hours only of Meditation (during server maintenance for example).
This is not criticism, really; it’s just the natural situation at the moment. Cheers.
there are some nice changes – but I won’t play on patch day
Bad ass stuff. A new player race… Sounds great! Hopefully you all will add the ability to change your race before adding a new one. One of the things making me not want to play is the re-grind of a character because I don’t like being a human anymore.
i hope you realize that if the blog ever said, “character grind will be substantially reduced.” you would make many, many people happy.
Congratulation, excellent job
I would like to know about the prestige classes, but I wait…
Go Go AV!
As usual this sounds all very nice and dandy… I cannot stress enough that at least half of what was promised here needs to go live with the same excitement it was presented.
why don’t you mention what are you planing to do with villages?
on EU there is no free spots to place deeds for what? like 10 months now?
why should the people who got deeds early enjoy the housing content while others need to sit on a deed rotting in bank for almost a year…
hehe maybe they are going to let us trade in our deeds for meditation points? ^_^
Hi, I hope that stat gaining is going to be improved significantly. Taking 12+ months to reach max stats makes absolutely no sense in a game where maxed characters can grief new players all over the place.
This might sound biased, but i think that meditation skill should work on stats, and raise double as fast if your name is the same as famous dead singers.

you need to worry more about the grind and prestige classes then anything else , once you figure that out youll have a large amount of players. this game should be based on war and battles instead its PvE.
meditation skill was more a bandaid and a bad one at that. Adding prestige classes will help with the grind because then you will not have to grind every skill in the game. no one should be master of all skills in the world which is were the grind comes from.
Make this game about PVP , war ,resource battles and less about the grind you may see your sub numbers go up alot. i mean what do you have to lose your subs already pretty low. better hurry major games are coming soon.
Awesome job guys! Keep it up
