Seamless, zoneless Darkfall

Seamless, zoneless Darkfall

When it comes to creating  game worlds, zoning and instancing seem to be the order of the day. With zoning and instancing there is no single game world but many fragments giving the illusion of one.

Darkfall is among the few MMOs featuring  a seamless, open and non instanced world. As if that wasn’t enough, Darkfall also features the largest world of its kind,  painstakingly hand-crafted; a monumental task for the development team.

To put things in perspective, let’s consider something we all take for granted. Imagine looking down at Darkfall’s massive world from high up and being able to see all the activities taking place. What you would see is numerous players scattered all over the world fighting monsters, clans clashing in large scale battles, sieges over clan cities, harvesters gathering the crafting materials they need, naval battles all over Agon’s seas, and much much more. All these activities happening at the same time, on the same single world with no artificial barriers between them. This is a single massive, living world. Any one player can take part in any of these activities without any level or class restrictions. The only thing stopping him would be his own lack of boldness.

Considering all this, it’s apparent we believe that the open dynamics of a seamless, non-instanced game world help make Darkfall gameplay very exciting and it’s well worth the commitment it takes to make it all possible.

  1. It’s true that it’s taken for granted

  2. Brian Ward says:

The only MMO I’ve seen to rival Darkfall’s world was Vanguard’s, and that game took a hundred devs and many millions of dollars. It’s amazing how much Aventurine can do considering their budget. A company that truly deserves all the success it gets.

  3. I wouldn’t say it’s seamless, you can definitely notice the micro zone loads when traveling around. It’s a step in the right direction but still needs work to be a “seamless” experience.
