I Love Darkfall, a Winning Interview!
This week we had a little chat with the winners of our recent I Love Darkfall contest and thought we’d share our conversation with the charming, Danish lads!
So start us off by telling us a little about yourselves.
We are both 25, as we are twins. We go to the same school “IT and Electronic Engineering” in Denmark and we will be done in the summer of 2011.
We started playing Darkfall after a friend was very into it. The whole 9 year “secret” production thing, made it a little cool as well. We really needed to try enter the world of Agon.
And how about your Darkfall careers? Give us a little background of your life in Agon.
Well we both began to play for 9 month ago I believe. We started by joining a clan pretty fast, as we were told would be the best. And pretty fast we were fighting Kraken and did dungeons.
We are both very busy with school so we don’t have tons of time for playing. So we were kicked by the clan cause of this I believe My brother has been really busy and he never got time for playing. I play approx. 3-4 days a week and still being noobish, so the stories to tell are not that great yet, but I will not hesitate in telling that I have had some awesome man to zombie fights!
I have been very active in a lot of mmos out there, and I believe that a lot of the players in Agon have done the same once or more. But being more busy than ever, and with some experience in the mmo field, I feel that Darkfall makes the most sense to play at a casual state than any other mmo.
A casual story from a casual player, would be my attempt yesterday to get for the first time ever to my clan city. I joined “The Fremen Knights” for 1 month ago. Everything was going good and I even found a player tombstone with some nice gear. Happy times! But unfortunately I was killed halfway by 3 enemies. I might try again in a couple of days, when I’m physically and mentally ready for it.
Now to the subject at hand! Walk us through the creative process behind your contest entry. How did you come up with the idea?
Well we were pretty much from the beginning using the forums and that’s where we discovered the contest.
The idea came up because our mom and dad work with concrete on there job. To win 5k dollar you have to make something cool to stand a chance. And I knew that we had most of the materials and tools needed and that it was possible for us to do some sort of concrete dragon. I believed we had a chance, and that was the motivation needed to start the project.
To start with, I asked my dad if it was OK for me to “steal” all his trash iron. He accepted the crazy idea and I started on the project alone. When I say trash, it was really trash. The iron inside the dragon consist of 2 x manikin human size dolls, some water pipes and kids outdoor toys.
It seems like a phenomenal amount of work, were there any pitfalls along the way?
I cant really remember when I started the project. I guess maybe early May or something. But because of school and a slow start, I discovered that I couldn’t make it on my own. Or it would be very hard. So I begged my brother to help, which means he required half the money. Very sad.
Else I would say, just that you use so much time after school sometimes from 15.00 to 21.00. That’s also why it was cool to be 2 on the project. It surely increases the motivation to see someone else work on the wings or head, that you might not have the best idea yourself how to do.
But of course there were some more pitfalls. The sad thing about working with concrete, is the fact that it’s very hard to change when it’s first dry. There are some things on the dragon that didn’t ended as intended and actually we also did a fourth weapon, the “Ildhammer” but it was a disaster and we had to destroy it.
Tell us about the actual months of work, it certainly seemed like something that you enjoyed doing. Any interesting or amusing stories arise during your creation?
We where very busy from the start and we knew that. So instead of using a lot of time discussing how the head or how the tail should be created, we divided up the tasks and agreed on not to talk much about how to do specific things, but just to do something. So actually, I had nothing to do with the head, as my brother did never touch the arms and legs It was a funny way to do it, but also very efficient.
One funny story would be when my brother was working with the smoke. I worked with smoke before, and knew that just a tiny hole would let a lot of smoke go through. We didn’t had the smoke up and running before late in the project, so we had to just do the nose and head and believe in it would working. My brother was very sure on his skills, and that there would be absolutely NO smoke coming out from anywhere else than the nose by the time he would be done. But first time we turned on the smoke machine, smoke just came out of the eye, mouth, nose and teeth as well. It looked very amusing and not very killer dragonly as we wanted it to. He just looked at all the smoke and said “Yeeeeeah, it could be better”. Hehe.
A interesting thing about the project, is possibly how you can think back on the project and say, hmm. I couldn’t do this ever again. The effort put into the dragon and the weapons, might have been to little to much. And I believe that next time there will be a contest this big, I might just go for a easy small project just for the excitement of joining a contest. But you never know. ;~)
So what is the dragon doing now? Is he (or she?) the biggest garden gnome ever?
She’s totally having control over Denmark. Haven’t you seen the newz? “Big Darkfall dragon killing innocent people”, and the update on how it is now “also gaining xp”.
No. Its not true. The truth is more sad. Its donated to my mom and dads miniature golf lane, and is only working as eye candy for now. The winter time is almost beyond Denmark, and the golf lane is shut down, and the dragon, which by the way is named “Puff” is going to hibernate very soon I believe.
The Darkfall offices could use something mighty and grand to keep away the mutated and fierce Athenian seagulls! Would you ever consider donating your dragon to the Darkfall gardens?
Well we can talk about the donation. It could be cool. And with the smoke working and such But I believe the work in getting it from Denmark to Greece is some job. If you does not have a portal working from Denmark to Greece I think you will be needing a truck and maybe an extra 5k dollars.
Its also to heavy for us to move now. We will need a crane that can lift about 600 kg. I’m sure it can be done, but it will take some work to do.
Alright, thanks very much guys! It was a pleasure to talk to you and I’ll ask the devs about the possibility of setting up a portal between Greece and Denmark.
