Monster on Agon! Darkfall monster unique abilities

Did you know that Darkfall Monsters don’t use run-of-the mill aggro range detection?

Most MMOs use an “aggro range” to determine if NPCs can “see” players or not.  Monsters react to players only if they enter or leave a specific area linked to the monster or the monster spawn. Monsters could be patrolling right in front of you, but won’t react if you stay outside of their aggro range.

Darkfall uses a more complex and interesting system. Monsters aren’t limited by aggro range but instead rely on sight and sound to determine where the player is. They actually use vision and hearing. Darkfall’s AI developers are always on the ball adding improvements and features to existing mechanics. Furthermore, Darkfall’s designers are very focused on maintaining a logical approach when it comes to deciding if and what kind of senses to give specific monster types.

Can you recall monsters you’ve encountered with obvious strengths and weaknesses when it comes to sight and hearing? Have you noticed that you can use terrain or obstacles to break line of sight with monsters and that you can actually sneak up on them crouching from behind?

  2. Absolutely True. The best AI i’ve ever seen in a mmorpg. There are monsters, like the iklit ( they are demi humanoid ants) that have obsviously sight problems, and others ,like archer monsters, having a very keen sight and senses… amazing. They may not see you, but if you make a sound, or cast a spell they start tryin to pierce your skull :D

    I’ve noticed that zombies are really bad at detecting people. I’ve also noticed some neat stuff with goblin scouts, they’ll always be ahead of the group, and then run for backup, as a good scout should.

    The AI in this game is easily the best in any MMO, and the rest of the industry should stand up and take notice. Instead, we get boring junk like SWTOR

  4. Aye, I noticed I can really hide and sneak with mobs, cool!

  5. Indeed, the best mob IE I’ve ever experienced in an MMO. Mobs can even fight among themselves sometimes when they receive too much friendly fire. Such moments are fricking cool and hilarious!

  6. Well, i wouldn’t call it true AI. Aventurine just spent alot more time then most companies scripting behaviors.
