September 30 Activity Report

September 30 Activity Report

Implementing the new siege system has been a very difficult task, but from the feedback we’re getting, it was well worth the effort. Player feedback has been very useful as far as us issuing quick fixes. Today’s patch hopefully addressed any remaining issues with the new siege system as well as some of Darkfall’s outstanding issues from a list the community compiled for us last week. Our feedback on the siege experience is very good, players seem to be having a lot of fun, and we’re committed to monitoring performance and your feedback to make all necessary adjustments to the system.

Today we’ll give you a report on team activity as well as on recently completed tasks.

Darkfall programmers have been working hard on the many tasks to be completed and there’s a lot of activity between coders and testers as features are tested, tweaked and added to the game. It’s not all about implementation; we’re also testing a lot of potential features like for example an improved third person camera added to the game. We are examining if players could benefit from a properly implemented tight third person camera which allows a better overview of their surroundings as well as watching their character in action. An improved camera coupled with other effects such as crosshair wobble could make combat much more immersive and fun. Momentum mechanics have also been reworked as you may have seen in the Bone scale armor video, a first implementation of the new mechanics. The current implementation looks much better and impacts gameplay in a more meaningful way. We’ll do a media peek on this feature after testing is concluded on this feature. More aesthetics programming tasks include ragdoll physics which will be added to animations. The initial implementation is complete and they are now in the tweaking phase.

We’re making changes in starting areas to protect new players during their first steps in the game. More and more powerful guard towers have been added. This will create a safer place for new players since the towers will react to any PvP even if it’s between players of enemy clans.  As usual, red players won’t be welcome in starting areas. We’re not looking to create safe zones but we think that a tiny fraction of the game should have safer zones than what we offer now, and that new players should be able to enjoy some protection against disruptive behaviors while they learn the game basics. In contrast, the vast majority of Agon, outside starting areas, is now lawless.

Clan city and hamlet tower and bank options can be adjusted on a per holding basis and you don’t need to apply universal rules. This gives clans with multiple holdings greater freedom and more options. We are also upgrading the defensive options for player holdings. Player-controlled cannon towers are more powerful and also fully customizable, meaning that clan members can choose what type of cannon they want on each one of them. We’re also experimenting with guard towers of increased effectiveness with the limitation that this occurs only when and for as long as they’re being “fueled”. The idea is to provide more options to the defending clan, therefore promoting the use of siege machinery (e.g. war-hulks and cannons) by the attacking clan(s). To this end, the construction cost of siege machinery is reduced while the defensive structures (e.g. guard towers and cannon towers) are more fragile.  Additionally, we are working on options which allow all clan members to operate a city gate, without compromising the city’s security, without the need of a higher ranking officer being present.

Obviously the new armor specialization system is one of the major focus areas in our activities. Every armor in the game has to be checked, rebalanced and tested in order to achieve balance between play-styles. The core work has been completed and the system is ready for testing. The same team working on the new armor system is also working on the new spell system that goes along with it in determining each character’s strengths, weaknesses, so ultimately their play style. In this process, spells have been removed; others will be available only to certain monsters, and opposing magic schools will be reintroduced to the game. With the large number of spells in the game, there’s a lot of balancing to be done in this area as well.

On the new map/journal/clan tool, we have reported all that we can in previous blog articles. The only thing to say here is that this new tool is now waiting for the new GUI to be implemented so it’s development can be concluded. Which brings us to the new user interface: This is the centerpiece of the relaunch version in terms of impact, as well as development time, connection to other features, and complexity. Our two lead programmers are focused on this task and as development progresses, more people from the team are getting involved so that we can complete implementation in a timely fashion. The GUI is the pivot for the relaunch, as nearly every other feature and system will be using it.

Time to move on to the Art team that also has its hands quite full. The main tasks that our artists are keeping themselves busy with are modeling new and existing monsters, animating new ones and working on customization options for the player characters. Currently the new Infernal and Celestial monsters are being animated, finishing touches are being applied to the new Khamset monster family models and new haircuts are being worked on for all races. The haircuts for Humans, Alfar, Mirdain and Orks are done and the artists are now working on Dwarves and Mahirims. Also, new props are being created for a new Red Pharaoh themed dungeon that is in the works. There is also concept art that has been created for various aspects of art, monsters, weapons for the new crafting system, dungeons, props and new coat of arms images for all the NPC factions of Agon.

World builders are working on re-designing  the Orc NPC cities, as they recently completed work on the Human cities. All clan holdings have now been re-designed and await testing. Dungeon remakes and additions are underway and the all new Red Pharaoh themed dungeon, located in Rubaiyat, is currently being worked on. This is a completely new dungeon and, while the big guy himself will not make an appearance yet, it will be inhabited by the Red Pharaoh’s most powerful servants. One thing to note here is that up to now dungeons where created by stitching various props like corridors, floor pieces, walls and the like together. The new system we’re using now allows for dungeons to be created from a seamless mesh much like terrain is created for the rest of the world. This allows our world builders to create much more intricate and appealing dungeons while keeping polygon counts to a manageable number.

Lore and quest wise, the team is working hard on re-writing all of the text and descriptions for old as well as new quests, dungeons and areas. The central task here is working the re-launch into Darkfall’s existing lore and providing a role playing aspect to all of the changes that are coming. Some specific player actions are also being integrated in to the lore of Darkfall 2.0. This team is also working on re-naming some monster families as well as items, equipment and NPC factions to provide a smoother overall consistency.

We hope that this gives you an idea on all that we’re working on at the moment. There’s also more that we’ll speak about in next activity reports. As always your feedback on what we say here is very welcome and it is sorted and presented in our development meetings.

Thank you for reading.

I still really need to see some information on the wipe. Saying it will never happen, then that it may happen, and then that it is not an issue for the present has done more damage and kept more players away from your game (including myself) then I ever thought possible.

  2. Possibly the most information ever given to us. thank you.

  3. “Today’s patch hopefully addressed any remaining issues with the new siege system as well as some of Darkfall’s outstanding issues from a list the community compiled for us last week.”

“+ Fixed tower-screams. Audio now plays on random probability.

+ Increased the rewards for village control-point capture.

+ Increased the rewards from trade-routes. Exchange rate for gold increased. Item drop chances increased, item drop quantities increased, all rare ores added to possible item drops.

+ Increased maximum chat ignore slots from 3 to 25.

+ Fixed sea fortress live times for NA1.”
    OMG OMG OMG reallllyy?

  4. Sounds like ETA is january. It’s not THAT bad, however …

    • more like mid 2012. but w.e BF3 !!!

    • It was originally promised to be out in the third quarter of 2010. A January 2012 ETA is EXACTLY ‘that bad’. Also, nothing they have ever done, EVER, has come out when they said it would. Also, nothing they have ever done, EVER, has been what they said it would be, or contain what they said it would contain. Come mid December, or perhaps sooner, they will push the date back, yet again, and/or tell us about additions that have delayed the launch, and/or tell us about changes to the launch. In the last two years that is all they have ever done. As much as I would like them to stop doing that, and as much as I love Darkfall, I can assure you that is how it always goes.

      • Well, if you treat AV and Darkfall like any other game/game company out there, then yes, it’s awfull bad.

But IMO think about AV like about that crazy girl next door. She can bring you crazy fun sometimes, but also can blow your mind out. Just accept good times when they are good, and skip bad times when they are bad. It’s easy.

    • that game was complete shit bro

id rather play fkin wow then that as its just a better gfx version of bf2… fuckin gay

  5. Jonas Opasi says:

BLA BLA BLA. That’s all I read, sorry.

Not interested in your drible Tasos, I’ll be more interested when solid patches start rolling out and not all this crap you feed us every week.

  6. Guys just 1 thing… your graphics already LOOK amazing!!! its like oblivion feel… dark… very immerse… only issue is… players here with SOOO much to loose will turn off all shadows… hell people will play 2D if it would give them the advantage…

so my comment… please please please…. fix the FPS… the interface and how LAG affects the game…

I could play other games full graphics and not worry about the level of my graphics affecting my PvP….

Awesome graphics… keep it going… great report… great patch… PLEASE make it so we can play with shadows… in 200v200 sieges

Add some love to racial R80′s

  7. how about an added benefit… to village capture…

if your clan captures a point… your entire clan can use a village recall spell…

Money + extra place to recall to and exlpore! = more pvp

  8. Though today’s game update was good, the activity report feels like it’s just a repeat of everything you guys have talked about before.

  9. Don’t understand it…. how can people have so much free time to complain and bitch about other peoples work rate, you fuckers go far far out of your way to get the first few comments in.

It’s okay if you can’t fucking handle it, just move on back to whatever you don’t suck dick at. Personally I’ll accept that population hit if I get the privilege of avoiding you all.

    A+ Adventurine… A+ indeed.

  10. Petr Dyntar says:

not interested in previews anymore, please deliver..

  11. Bear says:

    Yay opposing spell schools :)
Please don’t extend the third person camera view though. I hate the way that looks cheap like every other game.

  12. Philip Gheno says:

Whats this feeling? For some reason I am confused. yes it is confusion…
    ………..
Hmm, oh I see now. It’s the absence of disappointment.

  13. dam making archery even harder to hit :( you guys need to ad magic wobbel to than.

  14. David Hicks says:

    Better update then usual!
This is fantastic. About time we see some minor patches!

  15. Alex Olszowy says:

You know i’m actually excited for this game now. I can’t wait till i can subscribe again and play on df2.

  16. Tyler Burke says:

    Soooo….ETA = Spring 2012. Got it.

As much as I appreciate the detail in this report (very good Tasos, you’re learning), my first impression was “This could have been posted in January 2011, and I wouldn’t have known the difference”.

If the siege system took 4+ months to test, I don’t even want to think about how long it’s going to take to test everything else.

What would make me happy? A checklist. “This is done, this is done, this is done, testing this, this and this, working on this, this, and that, but this and this still have to be started before the relaunch.”

  17. I look forward to playing DF again with 2.0. But you better be damn sure the grind is gone and there is some sort of caps. Do this and we will repopulate your game. Its taken years for you to start listening to your customers, so hopefully youre desperate enough to actually start implementing the shit we demand.

  18. Nick Mullin says:

If they tell us they’re going to wipe then it’s the end of the current game that they’re using us all as guinea pigs for 2.0 testing. No eta to me means they’re going to have everyone start fresh.

  19. Please, please, please do away with ‘Lawless areas’. It is a bad idea, and kills much of the fun of the game, makes alignment meaningless, and punishes ‘blues’.

Alignment is a very, VERY, core issue in any RPG, and you need to sort that out FIRST! Agon is a world where creatures of order/good and chaos/evil walk the land. It is a world where gods, magic, and monsters are real. The last time I checked, the ‘RP’ in MMORPG stood for ‘role playing’. I don’t have a problem with ‘encouraging PvP’, as PvP is an aspect of any fully developed RPG. However, much of the changes that have happened of late, have ‘ruined RP’.

Darkfall had the potential to be truly awesome, in a way never before seen in any computer game, ever. Please, please, please, stop destroying that potential for bells no one wants to blow, and bells no one wants to ring.

  20. Martin Erber says:

DF 2.0 release date could be realistic in mid of 2012 ..think about the localisation with the asia partners..and they dont localize the df 1.0 !! its for the df 2.0.

first for what i was confused, was the sentense that a team finished the hairs of alfar/mirdan and orks..wtf? thought that was finished in 2010 when they showed us the “new” race models.

second was the information with the orc npc city..thought tpo that they are already finished..

so it looks more and more that they create df completly new from the ground up, so its a new game and this will overwrite the the df 1.0 version like an expansion..so its realistic or in my eyes would be great when we get a wipe for all banks and skills/spells for a fresh start into an new A(N)gon Time Age.

    regards

    • Martin Erber says:

Also i wish some information about the important changes into the Alignement System atm ..yea .. its useless. Every PvP Guy who want to have fun in the evening and is running with a grp cant consider about negativ points if they have to protect own partymembers.

  21. I haven’t felt this good about Darkfall since beta. PLEASE deliver on all the things in this update. THANK YOU!

  22. Kevin Grixti says:

Theres a couple new items there mentioned, nice :)

  23. Hopefully you test this more than the siege patch

  24. Nightmare UDL says:

Can you please just announce if you are going to wipe or not? Not bullshit just straight out answer what we want to know. Will all of our characters have the same skills and stats as they have now. And what items will you wipe? Or will all stackabkes stay in the game and we will just deconstruct all our old gear. Just give us an exact answer please!!!!

  25. ..well, i forgive you AV, but, more and more days im sure of not back…

  26. Tasos please do the community a favour and say “characters will not be wiped, and DF 2.0 will be applied to EU-1 and NA-1″.

That and add +1 bind spot to all houses, especially if you are not going to code rent being payable by owner/friends only any time soon. Making villages more appealing places to play is only going to cause frustration if you continue to make them effectively impossible for most players to participate in due to most of the current houses being owned by people who no longer even play the game.

P.s. I doubt anyone in the game would complain one little bit at all if you progressively release DF 2.0 features into DF 1.0 as they are ready. I appreciate from your post that the new interface has to be ready before that can happen, but I think I am not alone in that I would prefer to have DF 2.0 improvements sooner even if a few features to say “not enabled yet” than keep marking time waiting for a mega patch that seems unlikely to be released this year.

I AGREE>…..update what you can, give us the changes in advance. It will help the players understand whats coming, and help you at AV to squish any bugs that may come.

I also have to agree with Edward Paddock, too many lawless areas will make the alignment system even more useless. You guys did a great thing by making it more difficult to become blue again, but you made it TOO difficult for people to come back from the evil side. As it is now, its easier to stay red than remotely attempt to be blue again. It should be difficult, not insanely impossible.

WHERE ARE THE BONUSES FOR BLUE PLAYERS?

I’d like to see more ‘usefulness’ to the world itself. Those downed trees, why cant i cut them with my saw? All those houses in the npc cities that cant be used… perhaps a ‘for a fee’ vendor in the capital cities that will ‘fetch’ an item from distant player vendors. Using this vendor would make you ‘encumbered for 45 seconds’ so that other players, if they were inclined to do so, could attempt to liberate the loot from you.

I’m happy that the updates are happening and that information on the changes is flowing.

      • Id rather those useless houses in each NPC city to let me rent a house, that i pay taxes on.. so that i have a house bind. Even better, a house bind to my racial capitals. Oh wait I’m red, add the same option to chaos cities please.

    • Sentius Nox says:

plane and simple listen to this girl what ever she says. this is by far the best thoughts I’ve ever seen posted. LISTEN TO HER IF U WANT TO KEEP UR GAME ALIVE!!!!!

  27. So when is this Darkfall Forever coming out ?

  28. The usual rewind/repeat activity report as always. Not impressed.

  29. Still no eta on 2.0? getting kinda old…

  30. have some damn respect for Av!

we’re all people in the end, and although it is fun to work in a field you are passionate about, work is work.
there is probably so much back story on why they can’t deliever updates on time. (people leaving, people sick, people loosing interest, all common things in a work place)

Just think, since when did anything you planned worked out fine without any problems?

I don’t understand why people have to sit on their high horses, judging and criticizing this company’s every move.

    AV don’t owe you anything!

  31. John Taylor says:

No offence, but looks like a good thing me and my clan unsubbed until DF2010 expac, doesn’t look like we are going to see it until at least summer next year…

  32. ***Do the armour thing SOONer than the rest. So that new players are able to KNOW how to build up their characters!***

  33. Dylan Han says:

    Good update and good info.

  34. Matt Goebel says:

I cancelled my subscription and didn’t play anymore once i had heard there was even a possibility of a wipe. Since everyone seems to be avoiding the question and feeding us bullshit i’ve decided to play Battlefield 3. I gave away my house, sold my crap and cancelled my reoccurring subscription. Until i get some solid non-bullshit answers i’m not wasting my time anymore.

  35. what about wipe or not? stupid fucking… I mean..

  36. i like the 3rd person camera extension. the constant figure eight sword fighting is annoying. skillful, but annoying. i want to be visually stimulated by the game. there is no way to enjoy perpetual screen slide. also, fix the slow poke strafe. there is not a single first person shooter that makes you constantly look left and right to properly dodge ranged attacks. this also goes along with the annoying forced screen sliding. a “video” game is first and foremost a form of visual entertainment. i prefer looking at my target as apposed to charging a nuke looking at the tree to my left, or the pile of ruble to the right, finding the target, then cast.

  37. Jeff Terry says:

People need to keep unsubbing until AV fixes all of the issues that us players want fixed. Tower screams are fixed it seems, increased village gold drops, etc. so we’re making process! But not enough.

Keep unsubbing until they really get to work!!

  38. This week there was ongoing work and testing done on the features we detailed last Friday. We will probably resume our media sneak peeks next week starting with the new momentum and camera mechanics. As we work towards our next sprint meeting we will pass on any information that becomes available. Thank you.

    loled

This is not an issue for the present past or ever

    Poll :
Do you think DF 2.0 will come out this year yes or no

    My vote hell no

  39. Eric Gayman says:

Please add unarmed combat, and slide tackle if you add momentum.

I’ve been goofing around with a 3d engine using momentum and something I realized, is that it’s really annoying.

If you want to make Darkfall feel more like a RP game you should add modifiers to food to track Hydration, Protein, Nutrition, Carbohydrates, Fullness, and over all Mood.

Sounds like AV is keeping really busy I hope you consider a return to Darkfall free trial when you get 2.0 rolling

  40. is good but there is a big bug that complete mess your game for two years, we perceive that the lag of the arrival of players in our area, it kills the roaming pvp

  41. ive been unsubbed for almost over a year…. it had alot of potential but the stupid afk swim and grind was just dumb. they gotta make melee viable, and mages and archery different but balanced as well. they need to also wipe the pbase so everyone starts off fresh. the beta players had too much an edge

  42. So is all of the above for DF2.0 or DFO? Cause it seems like a royal waste of time to redesign Orc cities etc if everything is being “replaced”.

And who gives a shit about a vipe, play the game for what it is… a game!
